i don't get it, folks, i really don't get it. has the aids crisis been solved? are third-world children no longer being sold into lives of prostitution and slavery? have the different world religions finally found a way to co-exist without murdering each other? if the answers to these questions are "no", "no", and "no", then can someone please tell me WHY IN THE HELL the merry christmas/happy holidays controversy is DOMINATING the thoughts and speech of prominent conservative christians in the media???
OK, so wal-mart has "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas" on it's promotional materials. so municipalities refer to their decorated trees as "holiday trees" instead of "christmas trees". and schools are now taking "holiday breaks" instead of "christmas breaks".....i get that. but i have 1 simple question: WHO CARES?
.
.
.
did jesus not die for you if wal-mart puts "happy holidays" on it's brochure? is your faith somehow violated and rendered irrelevant if tuscaloosa has a "holiday tree"? (well, actually, yes, i would argue that your faith is rendered irrelevant, but for different reasons). let me be very clear about this: if christmas is important to you (as it is to me), then send out cards that say "merry christmas". talk about "christmas" with your friends and co-workers. read the christmas story with your family, etc, etc, etc. it is beyond me how it can take away from anyone's enjoyment of the season if certain corporations and government groups do not embrace christmas the way you do. if you want to celebrate christmas, then CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!!!
believe it or not, there ARE groups out there that do not share your beliefs. and because of your myopic complaining that EVERYONE who shares your air space is not celebrating the jesus god that you do, i hope you are not surprised the next time a non-believer says they would never believe in christ because of the way christians act....because if you were my only example of christ, i would most certainly not believe in him either.

Amen, Junior!!

Okay I am going to admit this to everyone because last night I was truly moved by the show 7th Heaven.....I know major WB cheese but its message was exactly what you are saying Mol Jr. and they were just living what they believe and that in itself is just an amazing message.....they gave the church support to a unmarried, pregnant girl who use to be an addict....instead of gifts the family donated time to charity as a way to give back and it all ended w/ everyone gathered listening to the x-mas story....and everytime they left the room they said Merry X-MAS to the person staying in the room....very good message....just my thoughts.....

I'm with you 100 percent. This topic has been the subject of pretty much all my blogging lately. What with the Holiday Spruce being so nearby on the capitol lawn, it's hard to avoid. Also, your little description of emergent led me to do a bunch of reading - so thanks for the tip off. Happy Holidays.

I just watched Ellen, and Jim Carey was mocking this very topic...talking about getting his "nondenominational shrub" that he was going to decorate, and that 'snow angels' were now out lawed...I laughed so hard! (He's canadian by the way *wink*)

can't we all agree that Jesus hasn't been the reason for the season for quite some time now?
it hasn't even been close, really
American commercialism has truly won the day; I suggest that those who want to have a spiritually meaningful holiday season need to dramatically distance themselves from this weirdness and officially let Christmas as we've known it die off instead of trying to re-gain sacred ground in a public arena
--- but, hey, that's just me

changing the radio station in the car the other day and i stumbled on KLTY and heard a listener say, what i asuume is their Christmas slogan - "Thanks KLTY for keeping the 'Christ' in Christmas".
then they played "Santa Claus is coming to town"
i laughed out loud.

i did mis-spell 'assume' on purpose because i did not want to make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'

one last thing, the city of White Settlement is going to keep calling it Christmas for now, but will vote on it next year.

yes, yes mol jr.
according to this theory our usual sunday worship would be incomplete or lessened because our world doesn't recognize sunday as the sabbath. when did Christianty start to require such affirmation from the world ...
